Edwards is in…

John Edwards officially entered the 2008 presidential race today because … his campaign website accidentally launched a day early.

“Aides quickly shut down the errant Web site,” the Associated Press reported, “but could not contain news of the obvious, even in the shadows of former President (Gerald) Ford’s death.”

There was a surprising revelation from Edwards’ platform.

“The priorities did not mention Iraq,” the AP reported, “evidence that some candidates may want to move beyond the war in the next presidential race.”

Bownback in Iowa

This Weekly Standard article by Terry Eastland notes that the Iowa Caucuses are especially well-suited for an low-funded underdog campaign like Brownbacks. But the interesting part of the article is where Brownback would like to position himself in this fight.

The Brownback campaign, in short, sees an opportunity to position the senator as the standard-bearer for social conservatism. Jerry Zandstra, an ordained minister in the Christian Reformed Church and political activist in Michigan and a member of Brownback’s exploratory committee, is attacking Romney online for his views on abortion (as well as on other social issues), describing him as a candidate who is “historically pro-choice” but whose position “depends on the next election.” Zandstra is also taking on Giuliani (“unquestionably pro-choice”) and McCain (“B-plus” on opposing abortion).

Brownback is going to be a pain in the neck for John McCain.

Former President Ford Dies

 LOS ANGELES – Gerald R. Ford, who picked up the pieces of

Richard Nixon’s scandal-shattered White House as the 38th and only unelected president in America’s history, has died, his wife, Betty, said Tuesday. He was 93.

“My family joins me in sharing the difficult news that Gerald Ford, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather has passed away at 93 years of age,” Mrs. Ford said in a brief statement issued from her husband’s office in Rancho Mirage. “His life was filled with love of God, his family and his country.”

The statement did not say where Ford died or list a cause of death. Ford had battled pneumonia in January 2006 and underwent two heart treatments — including an angioplasty — in August at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

GOP TIME! Romney In … Sanford too?

Governor Mitt Romney is ready to announce his candidacy for the 2008 Republican Nomination. This comes straight from the associated press:

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is poised to announce his campaign for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination in two phases early next month, a top adviser told The Associated Press on Friday.

The Massachusetts chief executive is expected to file paperwork as early as Jan. 2 with the Federal Election Commission, establishing a presidential campaign committee and permitting himself to begin raising money for his race on the first business day of the new year. Romney will leave office on Jan. 4.

Because he is a Northern politician I don’t see him as doing very well. Northern politicians haven’t donw that great in the past FIVE election cycles and I see no reason why that would change.

Speaking of Governor’s another one has emerged as a possible Republican Candidate. And that person is none other than the South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford. Some pro’s for him is that he is from the South, he’s a governor and he’s in the Reagan mold when it comes to fiscal issues.

When the state House overrode all but one of his 106 spending line-item vetoes in 2004, Gov. Sanford stormed the Capitol the next morning with a piglet under each arm. Red-faced Republicans squealed, but voters loved the bold move. Realizing they couldn’t be quite as wasteful as their counterparts, the Senate sustained seven of the vetoes–but still overrode 99.

Let’s see how these to play out…

The colors have come down to us from the ancient Britons and Romans, who used holly to decorate their homes for winter. Because holly is an evergreen which weathers the cold of winter, ancient peoples believed that the plant would lend its strength to their homes and families. Holly also has meaning as a Christian symbol; the thorns are said to represent Christ’s crown of thorns, and the red berries symbolize His blood.

Giuliani 2008 Exploratory Committee Website, Edwards to Iowa, and Jim Gilmore Exploring 2008 Bid

A quick wrap up of today’s events!

Rudy launches his Presidential Exploratory website by stating this:

As you may know, I’ve been traveling the country campaigning for Republicans and listening to Americans across the nation. With the midterm elections over, now is the right time for me to seriously consider running for President of the United States in 2008.

Also today, we find out that Senator Edwards is going to be in Des Moines for a special event and town hall meeting on Thursday, December 28th.

James S. Gilmore III, announced today he would form a committee to explore a presidential bid in 2008. He is a former Governor of Virginia and a former chairman of the Republican National Committee. He stated that the Republican field lacks a “committed conservative” capable of making a  campaign for the White House. We will see how fare this one goes…

Warner Reconsiders??

 The Hotline and PoliticalWire are both reporting that former Virginia Governor Mark Warner (D) is already reconsidering his unexpected October withdrawal from the 2008 Presidential race. He’s reportedly waiting to see what develops in the next few months with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton before making any new decision. Meanwhile, Warner is keeping his leadership PAC active and recently sent holiday cards to key New Hampshire Dems.

John Edwards has decided to run and has planned an official announcement in New Orleans within approximately two weeks. He is labeled as a rising star in the Democratic party, and it was thought that he would have a bright future.
